more random thoughts…

So it’s been the same ol’ same ol, for the most part. Seems like not much ever changes around here. Cayden spent a bit of time with me and we had a little fun together, like we always do. The last three weeks have been busy as hell at work. The fall semester ended and a new semester begins tomorrow so the guys in my department and myself have been kept pretty busy with things to do over the break. It’s been pretty slow the last few weeks as far as dealing with actual people, but that’ll all change come 8am tomorrow morning.

Myself, I’m only taking two classes this semester. Anything more than that and I don’t have enough time to really devote to class, which makes my grades suffer (I’m down to a 3.429 GPA, which is completely unacceptable). This semester I get to have lots of fun with Accounting and Psychology. After this semester, I’ll have four classes left for my degree here and things are looking good for a transfer into the Information Technology program at Indiana State University in the next year or so.

Ashley and hubby Anthony came back from Bath, Maine for about a week to visit family and friends. Thursday night, they met me in Bloomington at Texas Roadhouse for dinner (my treat, of course). Lucky for me, margaritas are half-priced on Thursdays which has the potential of saving me a lot of money, but I only drink one or two that night (I swear!). Ashley, being the lightweight that she is, drank one amaretto sour and didn’t want anymore. We made her drank another one anyways, which ended up messing her up a bit (see pic). They’ve went home to Bath now, but they’ll be back around March (I think), at which time I get to wear a tux (lots o’ fun) for their “real” wedding…

After reading up on the Linksys WRT54G wireless router/switches, I was real tempted to go get one. For the uninitiated, these little devices come with MIPS processors, a decent amount of RAM, and best of all, they run Linux! Someone discovered it, then forced Linksys to release their source code in order to fully comply with the Free Software Foundation’s GNU General Public License. Now, there’s a handful of groups working on custom firmware for these babies. An “online acquaintance” of mine, known only as PolarWolf is somewhat involved in one of these, OpenWRT.

So, finally, I run out yesterday, grab a WRT54G and come home, ready to flash it with some custom firmware and get it going. To make a long story short, it didn’t happen. The router I bought is newer (has different hardware) than the ones that OpenWRT supports. I managed to get Sveasoft’s firmware loaded onto it and running. It doesn’t support IPSec, however, which was the whole purpose in buying this thing. Now I’m considering sending it off to [mbm], OpenWRT’s primary developer, and letting him hack on it and seeing if he can get it to work. Apparently, he doesn’t have one of these v2.2 G’s to test with, so that’d help out with development tremendously, I’m sure. Just gotta get contact info for [mbm]…

Hmm, I’m starving… later.
