super craptastic day

Well, today was one of the worst days I’ve had in quite a while…

Yesterday after work, I was heading to Indianapolis to stay overnight for an 8.30am start this morning. Lindsey met me at Starbucks after we both got off work and she followed me to the hotel. We got there, checked in, brought in our stuff, and, uh, did some stuff for a while. We both showered, then took off to find some grub. We ended up at Applebee’s (I had a nice sirloin) where we ate and sat talking for a while. We arrived back at the hotel around 10.30pm.

Fast forward to this morning. Lindsey had to be at work way earlier than me, so she got up, got ready, and split. I went back to sleep for a bit, then got up, showered, got dressed, yadda yadda. Anyways, check out time for the hotel was 11am and I always just check out before heading off to the meetings. I got all my stuff gathered up and headed outside to my truck to load everything up. When I started to put the key in the lock on the passenger side, it was gone. Just an empty hole there. WTF?

I walk around to the driver’s side and almost the same thing. This time the lock’s actually there, but it’s dangling inside the door. All of a sudden it hits me. I lean over, peer in the window, and look at the dash. Yep, my stereo system’s gone. Apparently somebody else liked it as much as I did. I took my stuff back to the room and went to the front desk to get the number for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

45 minutes or so later, an Officer Lindsey arrives (thanks to weez for pointing out that his name was Lindsey too). Pretty decent guy, overall. I didn’t really expect him to set out to find whoever stole my shit, just wanted it reported and documented for insurance purposes. We cruised around the building to my truck, he checked it out, wrote down what he needed to and split. I went back inside, got my stuff, took it to the truck and checked out. Not too long thereafter, I realized my phone wasn’t attached to my hip anymore. I went back in, asked for another key to my room (since I’d already turned mine in) and checked out the room. Nope, wasn’t there. I went back to the lobby near where our meetings were and everybody was on a break. I spotted weez and asked to use his phone. Called the MCSD back, told ‘em I left my phone in Officer Lindsey’s car and could he please be so nice as to come back to the hotel. Well, thankfully, another 45 minutes or so later, he did. That helped a bit, since at least I had my phone back.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch… later in the day I call Progressive, my insurance company. They were suprisingly helpful, took down the details and promised to forward ‘em to a claims representative in my area, nothing that $claims_rep would call within two hours. Indeed, before I was even 45 minutes or so away, a nice lady named Carrie called, clarified a few things and got me set up.

Now I have to meet with her about 10am tomorrow (I have an 8am meeting) so they can check out my truck, do an estimate, yadda yadda. Of course, I thought I still had the receipts from my stereo equipment, but of course I can’t find ‘em now. I only bought the damn truck three months ago and the stereo system the next weekend. Oh, they got away with a couple hundred CDs I had in the truck too. And a few bucks in change. But they left my nice little radar detector attached to the window. How thoughtful of them.

I guess I’m just glad they didn’t shatter any windows or do any more physical damage than they did. Bastards.

And thanks to D-side for the $20 for feeling sorry for me. I do accept PayPal. :)

[...] Well, for the second time in right about a year, someone broke into my truck and stole my stereo system. The first time was nearly a year ago (a href=”http://www.jeremygaddis.com/2005/02/24/super-craptastic-day/” target=”new”>more info here), at a hotel on the west side of Indianapolis where I was staying for three days for work. This time, they did it right in front of my apartment complex sometime overnight between the night before last and yesterday morning. [...]
