dsl upgrade ordered
Written by jlgaddis on July 24, 2005 – 10:56 am -Well, I put in an order to have my DSL (from SBC) upgraded. I actually called the service rep. for an unrelated matter, but she asked why I didn’t go for the “higher up” package (after finding out I was in I.T.). The package I have now is 1.5Mbps/384kbps for $14.95/mo. The “higher up” package is 3.0Mbps/512kbps for $24.99/mo. (just ten bucks more). I’m a bandwidth whore, I suppose, so I ended up calling back and having them upgrade me. The order is supposed to be completed by tomorrow, 7/25, so we’ll see…
I’d really love to have a static IP address, as I’ve had one for the last two years (even though I had to pay an extra $5/mo. for it). SBC’s lowest package, however, that’ll get you a static IP address actually gets you a /29. For $64.95/mo., I can get 1.5Mbps/384kbps with a static /29. That also gives you the ability to run your own servers, since it’s technically business-class DSL service. I’m actually running an HTTP server on my home DSL connection, now, but I’m not sure if I’m really supposed to or not. I did search through their ToS and AUP and couldn’t find anything expressly forbidding it, so I’ll just keep doing it until I hear otherwise.
If anyone from Bloomington, Indiana has residential DSL through SBC and has any insight into the whole running your own servers thing, I’d be interested in hearing it.
