yahoo! music engine
So after reading up on the Yahoo! Music Engine (YME) on Yahoo!’s site, I was somewhat interested — it sounded like a good idea. I also read Jeremy Zawodny’s blog every few days or so (you’ll notice I subscribe to his RSS feed on the right-hand side of my site) and caught a post that Jeremy wrote called Goodbye iTunes, Hello Yahoo! Music Engine. Jeremy switched over to YME, but since he works for Yahoo!, that’s not really anything spectacular.
The thing that got me was that you can sync your music collection across up to three PCs. That’s pretty attractive to me, since I regularly use an XP desktop here at home, and my laptop goes nearly everywhere with me (dual-booting between Fedora Core 4 90% of the time and XP the other 10%). Being able to share the same music on both computers seemed nice. I went ahead and signed up for a one-month trial, but I have to say I’m not overly impressed. It’s okay, but I don’t know that I’ll continue the subscription much longer. When I have a somewhat large collection of music that I’ve already purchased from iTunes, along with three stereos nearby, it doesn’t sound nearly as good.
I do think it’s a good product and they’re onto something with the subscription model, but it’s obviously not for everyone. For $5.99/mo., though, I had to try it out and find out for myself.
