open source code finds way into microsoft product

LOS ANGELESÖÂIn a move that shows just how far Microsoft Corp. has come, and how pervasive open-source software is in certain areas, the software powerhouse is, for the first time, including open-source technology in one of its shipping products.
Really? “…for the first time…”? No, I don’t think so.
Matter of fact, Microsoft first did this a loooong time ago. Remember ftp.exe? On November 19th, 2004, I wrote a post called Microsoft Lies Again, in which I made a note of Microsoft including code from FreeBSD in “their” command-line FTP client.
Don’t get me wrong — I think this is great. I think it’s wonderful that Microsoft is finally sticking to some standards. God knows they’ve modified the “standards” so much over the years so that their implementation strays from the standard just enough that it’s not interoperable. At least they’re admitting their using open-source code this time (to Microsoft’s credit, however, the code in ftp.exe was released under the BSD License, which doesn’t require the sort of disclosure that the GPL does).
