patch tuesday / windows server update services

It’s that time again… it’s Patch Tuesday! Well, tomorrow is, actually, but same difference…

The last few days I’ve been seeing the usual announcements about Microsoft’s security patches for the month of October. MS’s own Advance Notification for this month warns of 8 updates affecting Windows and 1 update affecting Windows and Exchange.

It’s time like these that I’m glad we have deployed a (somewhat) automated patch management tool, specifically Windows Server Update Services. With WSUS, all it takes is a few clicks a month to make sure the latest updates are approved for all of our client PCs. Group Policies take care of the rest, directing the PCs to check the server for updates and download them when they’ve been approved for installation. A few more clicks is all it takes to check the status and verify that the updates are, indeed, being installed on the clients. We ran Software Update Services prior to WSUS’s official launch, but WSUS is better than SUS on a grand scale. Best of all, Windows Server Update Services is free! If you manage a Windows environment and don’t already use WSUS, definitely check it out!
