Going under the knife

One evening a month and a half or so ago I started getting sharp pains in my chest all of a sudden. It felt like something was squeezing the air outta my lungs and my body temperature also went up substantially. After half an hour or so, I decided to head to the hospital. By the time Lindsey and I got there, I was “normal” again and decided just to come home as opposed to them telling me it could be anything and to come back if it happened again.

Maybe two weeks ago, it happened again. I woke up around 11.30pm and had the sharp pains again. It lasted on and off all night long, until about 10am the next morning.

Well, last night it happened again. I woke up in the middle of the night with the pain in my chest. I laid around for maybe 45 minutes before waking Lindsey and telling her I was going to the hospital. Once there, one of the first things done was an EKG. That came back normal, so they took some blood and X-rays. I was still in a lot of pain at this point, so they hooked me up to an IV and started pumping pain medicine into me. After a while I was “okay” again (in reality, I just couldn’t feel anything), so they scheduled me for a “test” at 10.30am and sent me home. Fortunately, they gave me a prescription because by around 8am, it was back. Anyways, we went back around 10.30am for the “test” (I didn’t know what kind of test it was going to be until I got there). They did an ultrasound of my chest and mid-section, specifically looking at my gall bladder.

After what seemed like forever, a doctor finally came out and asked how much pain I was in. She seemed shocked when I told her that I was feeling fine. Apparently, I have some gall stones that were messing up my gall bladder (I missed all the medical-speak details) and she said “it needs to come out now”. She was ready to admit me to the hospital right then and deal with it, but said she was willing to hold off if I wasn’t in any great pain. I told her that would probably be best right now so she gave me the contact info of the surgeon and told me to get in touch with his office.

Long story short, I have an appointment Wed. morning at 10.45am with a surgeon who apparently will be removing my gall bladder. I’m not sure when they’ll actually schedule that for, but I am assuming it will be as soon as possible. It’s also possible this medication may quit being sufficient, in which case I’m to head straight for the hospital so they can address the issue immediately.

Good news is I’m feeling fine at the moment and the medication isn’t screwing with me any. It’s taking care of the pains I was having and I’m “functioning normally” now and feeling fine. That’s all subject to change, of course, but I guess we’ll see what happens…

[...] That’s all of ‘em, I think. Let me know if I’m missing out on anything worth listening to. I like the shorter ones as it’s only about a 10-minute commute to work (if I stop for gas or smokes). I usually let the longer ones build up until either I have to travel to Indianapolis or somewhere fairly far away or until I just finally decide to delete ‘em. Since I’ll probably be spending a day or two in the hospital, maybe I can catch up on some of ‘em then. The only thing there to do is watch TV, which I don’t do anyways, so at least I can listen to some podcasts. [...]

[...] Long story short, it worked. I was actually off work at the time I composed the message, due to a surgery I was having. After I got back, six or seven of us got together in a meeting to discuss, among other things, the pros and cons of migrating the site over to Linux. I got the okay. [...]
