new gentoo server
Written by jlgaddis on November 23, 2006 – 7:47 pm -I recently picked up a new Dell Dimension 4600 PC from a girl who a) said it ran “slower than hell”, and b) was moving out-of-state and trying to get rid of as much stuff as possible.
I gave her $50 for it, confident I could get it going. I didn’t even touch it for a week or so, but when I did, I discovered the hard drive was about shot. That was easy — the next time I was close, I stopped in at Best Buy and plunked down $50 for a new 120GB drive. Problem solved.
I came home (to Mitchell) to do the family thing today, so I started a Gentoo installation before anyone showed up. In between hanging out with everyone and stuffing my face, I managed to get it completely installed (sans a GUI, for now).
P4-2.66GHz PC with 1 GB of RAM and a 120 GB HDD running Gentoo. For $100. Mmm.
