how to truly get things done
Written by jlgaddis on January 22, 2008 – 6:47 pm -like many others, i spend a fair amount of time everyday catching up on all the new items in my rss feeds, where i’m subscribed to a number of gtd related blogs.
while reading “7 powerful steps to overcoming resistance and actually getting stuff done”, i had an epiphany. i suddenly realized there were really only three steps that i needed to follow to increase my productivity exponentially. they are:
- close my web browser
- shut down my laptop and sit it aside
- GET OFF MY ASS!
seriously, try it. you might be surprised. =)

Ha. I had the ‘I cannot stick to GTD principles’ epiphany a while back. That system is too smart, too disciplined for me, but I’m still constantly trying to stay organized. I work remotely via my laptop a lot of the time, so I can’t go with Step No. 2, but I can almost go with No. 1, I just find closing up Outlook is the one that ups my productivity level. If it’s running, I cannot stop myself from looking at nearly every incoming mail, and then responding / acting upon theme etc. If I shut it down fo a couple hours at a time, I get tons more done …

i’ve had the same problem with email distracting me (especially with the blackberry). the girlfriend tries to convince me that somebody will call me if all hell does, indeed, break loose, but i don’t believe her. =)
just like you, the number one way to boost my productivity is to shut down outlook. i’m also unfortunate enough to have a co-worker who thinks he needs to cc: me on damn near everything, which doesn’t help. unfortunately he doesn’t take hints (and i can’t just go smack him!)
