Cisco console cable works with new ProCurve 2610
Written by jlgaddis on February 2, 2009 – 11:14 pm -A new HP ProCurve 2610 switch arrived today, so I brought it home with me to update the software and configure it in my lab. Before I had even opened the box, I wondered if I might be able to get it to work with my Cisco 2509 that I use as a console server (the ProCurves typically have a DB9 serial port for OOB management).
Imagine my surprise when I took the 2610 out of the box and noticed that it has a RJ45 console port on the front. Immediately I wondered if I could hook it directly up to the 2509, so I did.
It worked!
Now I’ll just have to take the Cisco 2509 to $work, find a bunch of RJ45 -> DB9 adapters and see if I can hook up the ProCurve 5400s and access them through it. Anyone tried this before? It sure would make things a helluva lot easier on me!

IIRC, I tried a DB9->RJ45 adapter on an older Procurve stack and I could not get it to work. I forget if I used a rollover cable or two DB9->RJ45 adapters with a cable in between.
I was very happy when HP started putting the console port on the front of stackables. My happiness was magnified when our 8212zl came with an RJ45 console port! I just wish the 5400’s came with an RJ45 console port too since since those are what we will be using throughout our buildings.

Chris,
I’ve had the same experiences with older ProCurves — no luck. I was quite elated to find the RJ45 console port on the front of this 2610. Like you, I wish the 5400’s had them as well. I’ve got a room full of them that I’m about to start configuring. Sure would be a helluva lot easier if I could just hook ‘em up to some 2509s!
